Importance of social media

Social media plays a crucial role in making connections between people and relationships. It is a valuable tool of communication with others locally and worldwide, as well as being able to share, create, and spread information. Social media has been around since 1997 when the National Science Foundation launched a robust nationwide digital network known as the NSFNET. A decade later the first true social media platform was launched. https://online.maryville.edu/blog/evolution-social-media/

Do you ever wonder or think to yourself how our parents survived without social media and that that you’ll never have to experience what life was like before social media? According to google, life back then was filled with things you could hear, see, touch, smell, and taste. People hung out physically and went to places together opposed to sitting on the phone and visiting one another online. So, what does social media mean to you? https://interestingengineering.com/a-chronological-history-of-social-media

I really like the quote in the image below. Just because social media is a form of communication doesn’t mean bad things always need to be posted or said.

Social media to me means people are connecting and interaction amongst other people to create, share, or exchange information in a virtual network of different communities. Social media just doesn’t impact people but also businesses which allows them to reach customers based on the user’s profile. The networks have unique access to the most personal information of its users that includes things such as their hobbies, interests, places, frequently visited, etc. The main communities of social media that I use for communication are Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.

Social media has become a huge impact to everyone within the last year and a half for due to COVID-19. Colleges/universities having to communicate with their students online teaching classes through a computer screen. We would almost skype with our professors but instead we used WebEx as our form of communication instead of meeting in person. Families and old people trading in their flip phones for smart phones to be able to communicate through social media such as having to facetime family members since we were basically locked in our houses. My 80-year-old grandma just got a new smart phone and let’s just say I wish her the best with it! In the image below it is showing how much the media consumption was impacted during the pandemic.

While texting, calling and FaceTime help couples communicate, social media allows them to virtually experience events in each other’s lives. Another reason social media is important to me is because it’s my main source of connection with my boyfriend while we continue our long-distance relationship. While he is 210 miles away at UW-Stout we use many forms of social media to communicate throughout the day. Snapchat is one of the biggest ones where you simply just take a picture add some text and then send the image! It’s a cool way of communicating since you can see what they’re doing and share moments with each other. We also use facetime a lot to be able to talk over the phone but also to be able to see their face. The image below is showing that long distance relationships are more successful than you think.

There are many positive effects of social media along with many negatives. Some positive effects to social media include meeting new people, joining a new community, spreads information faster than any other media, law enforcement uses social media to catch and prosecute criminals, social media helps students do better at school and it even helps employees and jobseekers find work. On the other hand some disadvantages of social media are it enables the spread of unreliable/false information, lacks privacy/exposes users, can cause students who are heavy social media users tend to have lower grade, lead to stress and offline relationship problems and lastly it can be a complete waste of time.

Overall social media has a crucial role in connecting people and developing relationships, not only with key influencers and journalists covering business activity and provides a great opportunity to establish costumer service by gathering information, answering questions, and listening to others feedback. Social media has become the most necessary daily activity that is used for social interaction to get to news and information, and decision making. Social media plays a very important role in my life and is very valuable to be where I can communication with others locally and worldwide, as well as being able to share, create, and share information. I am very thankful to have social media in this day in time where I can connect with my family and boyfriend.

  1. This was an enjoyable read. Adding the social media history information at the beginning was a nice touch. That was new information to me so it was interesting to see how far social media has truly come.

  2. I do find it interesting about how different we are from our parents when it comes to social media, how we see it more important to our lives than they do. Great job with your post, it was a great read!
