My Thoughts on Social Media

Hello everyone, my name is Morgan Gerow and I am currently enrolled in the Graphic Design program at NWTC. So far it has been an adventure for me, moving from my small home town to a city like Green Bay was definitely an adjustment but in the end, I know it will pay off in the end though. That being said social media is a big part of my life in order to stay in touch with family and friends from back at home, not only from home but also all over the world. Many of my friends joined the service after graduation, social media makes it possible for me to still be apart of their lives even though they are thousands of miles away from me and makes our tie strength strong.

Keeping in touch is a big aspect of social media for me personally I do not know what I would do without it. Many teenagers would have the same opinion as me, some may not but in the end social media makes communication possible. Think about your daily routine, at work on your lunch you make phone calls, check your social media accounts and messages you may have from others. In your free timeout side of work some may sit on social media platforms for hours, myself being one. The average person checks social media at least once a day, if not more. Personally the I spend most of my time on Snapchat, staying in touch with my friends, but Tik Tok, instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest are definitely apart of my list. This link provides statistics for the most popular social media platforms in 2019 https://www.statista.com/statistics/248074/most-popular-us-social-networking-apps-ranked-by-audience/ this is eye opening in some sense to be able to see how many people are actually involved with social media.

Besides communication, social media is a big part of promoting and getting yourself heard/known. Graphic design is something I am passionate about, art in general inspires me but not many people know that. Recently I have started drawing more than usual in hopes to make an account linked to my personal account where I will share my artwork. Linking my artwork account to my personal account will help promote my work to followers I already have but also help me gain followers who are interested. In order to get followers, staying up to date with the latest trends will be apart of my agenda to be successful. Creating a personal brand will help me out in the long run and I think this is going to be a great start in order to do so! If anyone else has ever wondered if they were "good enough" to have people look up to you or to be inspired by you, I suggested making a personal brand for yourself to get yourself out there. You don't have to be a well known person, anyone can do this! https://www.northeastern.edu/graduate/blog/tips-for-building-your-personal-brand/
Traveling is a big part of my lifestyle and hopefully my future. Who doesn't want to travel and see the world. If it was not for social media how would you get inspiration to travel? I spend a ridiculous amount of time on pinterest looking for new destinations to travel to. I also get inspiration by looking at others posts. I can't be the only one that sees someones post on a social media platform and think to myself "that is so pretty I want to go there one day". Communicating with friends to plan trips with them or to see them also a bug factor on how social media affects my life. It is important to me to be able to travel and social media helps me plan my trips! I recently went to Alaska and Texas both times to visit my friends who are serving in the military. Looking a pictures Alaska on social media made me realize how much I wanted to witness the northern lights and also the mountains, it provided the best location to go in order to see them as well.

To wrap things up I just want to encourage everyone to take advantage of everything in life. Social media is used for far more reasons than many might realize. Take in all the advantages it give you in life and think about where you would be without it. Never take anything for granted, as time does not come back so get yourself out there, let everyone see what you are passionate about you and promote yourself as much as you can. Learn from social media, take it all in. You will not regret it!

  1. I really enjoyed your blog. It flowed well and you have cute pictures to accompany your thoughts. It would have been really cool if you pulled a quote out of your own. I especially liked, “Learn from social media, take it all in. You will not regret it!” I think it would have looked good big and bold along the side.

  4. Hey Morgan!
I really enjoyed reading your blog post! Social media for me has also come into play when I travel. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do and without social media it would be hard to search things to do and the best places to go right?!
