“I learned that I still have a lot to learn” – Maya Angelou
As a student in digital and graphic design, Social media marketing is a great tool to gain customers and have potential customers see our work. Depending on the art style of your choice it can reach different audiences.
Taking social media marketing class taught me possible ways to further my art exposure and potentially gain customers and fans over time. Some important factors that we touched base on in class were; audience, platform, our goals, when and what to post, how often should we post, should we use hashtags and which ones. There are much more, but the list would get lengthy so I’m sticking to the parts that struck me the most.
Platform is quite important. It plays into the audience you will be reaching. This is also where you think about your posts, tweets and or stories depending on the desired platform. By making a schedule about posts and times it can also influence when the posts will be seen. I have been deciding between Instagram and Facebook. Each are different in how posts reach the desired audience. According to Liquid State.com A platform eliminates the need to build applications from scratch, reducing the costs normally associated with development. PaaS services are a viable option for companies looking to reduce their current operating costs, develop an application for the first time, or those with limited resources.
Over the last 8 weeks I realized that the audience can also influence how your company/ products are viewed. It can also impact future customers. Having an audience can expand your businesses horizons and lead to more exposure. I am currently thinking about my potential audience and trying to understand where it is best to share my ability and who it would benefit.

Goals are a great way to keep your eyes on the prize so to speak. This is where you brainstorm your ideas, wants and strive for them. I would like to work on having a broadened art style where I can accommodate peoples needs such as; logos, business cards, flyers, ads, mascot, illustrations etc. By setting myself up to have goals to achieve I can eventually over time become successful.
Something I’m still unsure about is hashtags and or tags. I find them quite annoying and over the top. I have noticed depending on the hashtag or tags used it can reach certain audiences. Hashtags can also influence your views and your impact on a certain platform. I know I will have to dabble in it more to figure out what works best for me but I know in time I will understand it better. According to hootsuite.com hashtags are a way to connect social media content to a specific topic, event, theme or conversation. They also make it easier to discover posts around those specific topics, because hashtags aggregate all social media content with that same hashtag.

Overall I learned more about platforms, hashtags, audiences, how to make a schedule, and how to set my goals for success. All are important factors to understanding and being able to succeed on social media. Over time I will take what I learned in Social media marketing and apply it to my own hobbies and business ideas in the future. By reading more about how to use social media for business success hopefully in my future endeavors I will be successful.
