Importance of Social Media to Me

Kiev, Ukraine – October 17, 2012 – A logotype collection of well-known social media brand’s printed on paper. Include Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Vimeo, Flickr, Myspace, Tumblr, Livejournal, Foursquare and more other logos.

The truth is social media has never been important to me. Okay I wouldn’t say “never”, I mean when Myspace and Facebook became popular that was all I cared about. But more recently I have actually logged out of my accounts and just took days or weeks without looking at them. The most popular social media I have is Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. I got rid of Twitter years ago, never was on TikTok, barely use snapchat, and all the other social media sites I just don’t use.

With Facebook I use it for family and friends to catch up with them and see what they are up to. I have deleted a lot of people that I don’t talk to anymore, or the ones that are always posting way too much about something that might bother me. I tried to get it down to the people who care about me and I care about them. But recently with all this negativity going on in the world I started to log off and enjoy my life without social media just for a little while.

Instagram is just a place I go to look at memes. I don’t have a lot of people on that one either except family and some friends. I follow pages that are like funny memes and stuff that would make me laugh.  My fiancé and I send each other funny post back and forth. I post on Instagram maybe 5 times a year, and it is pictures of my dog or pictures of my fiancé and me.

Now to YouTube, I use this most out of all the social media. YouTube is like TV for me, I don’t watch TV on a regular base. With YouTube I watch videos that involve vloggers, video game play, and music. I started using YouTube when I first moved into my house; I didn’t have a lot of money for cable TV, and didn’t have Wi-Fi hooked up in my house yet. I started to watch these videos as entertainment since I didn’t have anything else to watch. Even though we have Hulu live now and great Wi-Fi, I still choose YouTube over it. I have never made a video and probably never will but it is nice to keep up with the latest trend, the greatest video games, and listening to the newest music.

I started to look into it more and see what other people in my demographics use. And to my astonishment, I see that YouTube and Facebook are the most popular social media platforms. At my age of 25 years old I thought I was an old person for being only on these two platforms the most.  All you here about is people on Instagram and Twitter being the sites to be on, when actually Facebook is almost double the percent of Instagram and Twitter users.

With this class I am learning more and more about why Social Media Marketing is important. I never really noticed that a lot of companies put out ads on my social media platforms until I looked into it more. I started to actually look at the ads and wonder what they are really trying to get across and clicking on them and looking at more of their products. It is very interesting how they make the ads look for people to click on them or learn more about them. Sometimes I see an ad and think “oh I might want that” and look into the product they are trying to sell.

Do I think it is important? I would have to say yes for this day and age to be able to keep up with trends, news, and family/friends. I mean think about it how many times have you saw something on a social media platform before you heard it on the news or you don’t even watch the news because you hear it from social media anyways. But to conclude all this, social media has its ups and it has its downs but in the end it has a different importance to each person.

  1. I can definitely agree with this! If I could I would delete my Facebook page, but I only have to keep in touch with family and to connect with co-workers. I also keep it to stay in the loop with current trends. I doubt Facebook will be replaced but, it is adapting with the times and the users.

  2. I also think it is shocking that facebook is one of the most used social media platforms! Most people my age say that they have it “to keep in touch with family or older coworkers”. Facebook has become essential to business and to the aged population, and those who are younger have it to connect with both of those demographics. Other than that though, it really does not seem like most of the younger population are active on facebook, rather they have it for everyone else.
