Let’s Begin…..

Hello, everybody, my name is Joseph Halbfoerster and I am currently in the final semester of the Digital Media Technology Degree. I have been at NWTC for two years now as I came here directly out of high school. I grew up in a little town called Wrightstown, and I graduated from Wrightstown High School in 2017. I basically went from High School and directly into College. Wrightstown currently sits between the cities of DePere and Kaukauna. So you can get to it if you take Highway 41 south all the way to Appleton. You will then see the exit.

I am currently a full-time student here at TC, and I am trying to balance a part-time job at Cabelas. I wouldn’t really consider myself an outdoorsy person, but the discounts at the store are pretty decent. The only club I have been trying to get into at TC is Phi Theta Kappa. One of my past instructors told me that PTK is a really good club to get into for your future. I currently, however, can not afford the $75 dollars to get into the club, So that is a thing.

My family is actually originally from Georiga. I was born in Lawrenceville Georgia. But we moved up here in 2001 when I was 2. I know what you are thinking, “What Made You Move Up Here”. My dad worked as a Car Carrier and his company was based out of Chicago. My parents then talked that it would be a lot easier for my dad to come home more often if we lived closer. So they then decided on Wisconsin. As my mom did not want to live near Chicago.

My family have always been pet people all of my life. We used to have 3 rabbits and one German shepherd. But they, unfortunately, passed away with old age. We currently have two cats, who are both crazy, but they are the best. Their names are Rex and Flynn. I sometimes call them tweedle dee and tweedle dumb. As they are always together and always up to no good.

I absolutely love all things Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. Those three things have become a great part in my life. I grew up reading all 7 of the Harry Potter books and saw the first Iron Movie back in 2008. That does make me quite young as I was 9 when I saw it. But that movie was also able to make a great impression on me. Star Wars was one of the main movie sagas that were able to capture my imagination and create the spark for my passion to create.

I would say that I have a passion for creating. That is probably why I am in the DMT program. I have always enjoyed photography and graphic design. I can not really draw really well, so that is why I have moved onto the digital format. As it is a little bit easier to take an artsy photo then draw a picture. So photography is my way of showing the world how I see the world and how I am able to interpret it.

With the DMT program, I have also been able to build my own Youtube Channel. Its nothing really special right now, as I just upload a few videos here and there. There is a sad stigma with people and their Youtube channels as many of them are just there to get rich, I am not in it for the money at all. Don’t get me wrong it would be really nice if it took off, but I am mostly just here to create and show people how I see the world.

The one social media platform that I am on the most is Instagram. I was actually one of the first people in my friend group from Wrightstown to have an Instagram back in 2012, and I have not stopped posting since. I absolutely love the ability Instagram gives a user. It allows the user to share little bits of their daily lives. With me being a photography nut, Instagram allows me to post all the candid photos that I capture during my day to day activities. Social media allows me to share with my friends and family what I am currently up to in my life. Tools such as Instagram and Youtube give my family in Georgia and my friends at school across the state the ability to check in on me and see how my life is going. Social Media is a good tool but can be abused very easily. Especially in the professional world. Individuals have the ability to share what their company is about but could take it to far. Such as posting confidential information that could be detrimental to the company. There is a time and place for everything.

I feel that at my current job there does not need to be a social media presence. As working part-time as a clothing outfitter at Cabelas, I think it would be considered unprofessional for the company to allow their sales floor employees to be on their phones. We currently have a specific position for social media as it is our events coordinator. They are responsible for getting the word out for the events that the store might be hosting.

I do think however in a job that I might have after graduation would need to be a part of social media. I would like to either pursue a career in either film or video editing. Social media will then allow the company I would be working for or the film I am working on to be able to promote itself.

The reason why I am taking this class as I felt that it would be more beneficial than Website production. In high school, I took classes on both Dreamweaver and HTML coding. So I already have prior knowledge on creating websites and coding. I felt that it would be beneficial to learn more about Social Media as a whole and how it affects all of our daily lives. I hope that I am able to use the information in this class to help build my personal brand in the future.

There is already a plan in motion to help propel me into my future goals. My family has begun to prepare for our return to Georgia, as my mom has always wanted to go back “home”. If everything goes to plan and I graduate in May of this year. My family will be relocating back to Georgia. Hopefully, in the next five years, I will have a stable job in the film business in Georgia. Georgia has become the Hollywood of the South. As many TV shows and movies are filming a bulk of their scenes in Georiga and around the South. So hopefully I will be able to jump on the bandwagon down there.

I am looking forward to learning about all the aspects of Social Media Marketing in the next couple of weeks and I look forward to learning more about my fellow classmates as well. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me, and I will see everybody in the next Post……
