Creating Opportunities by Investing in your Personal Brand

Hi everyone,

My name is Tommie, I grew up in Oshkosh and have been working towards by Design and Graphic Technology Degree at NWTC since graduating high school. Since starting at NWTC, I have been both a part-time student and full-time student. Taking classes has not always been the easiest to do because I am also a manager at a store in Appleton, WI. Being a manager tends to take a lot of my time and energy; in a good way.

Personally, I like to think of myself as an open-minded and optimistic person. This tends to make having a few favorite hobbies difficult because I find joy in almost all aspects of my life. My greatest joy is my three-year-old lab mix who I love to spend time with. Going on walks and spoiling her at the pet store are some things I enjoy doing with her. She is always happy to see me, sometimes a little too much, but she brings much joy to my life.

I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I love it for the ease of finding information and connecting with people, but I often find myself stressing over worldly things when I am connected for too long or too often. Instagram and Facebook tend to be my go-to social media platforms, but also occasionally enjoy Snapchat and Pinterest. These are my favorite platforms because I enjoy the visual aspects of scrolling through my feed. I also have been using most of these platforms since middle school, making them very familiar to me.

As stated previously, I am a manager at a store in Appleton. Social media is not a large part of my job, but having knowledge in it would and will be beneficial to my career. I am striving towards being a well-rounded person in the business world, and am not truly putting all of my focus on social media.

After completing this course and after obtaining my Associate’s Degree at the end of this semester, I will be moving up to a general manager position with my current employer. This course and degree are not essential to obtain this new position, but I want to continually add to my personal worth.

Chapter 2: Expert Session

After reading Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in the textbook, and watching the short video titled “Personal Branding Examples With Dennis Yu & Logan Young.” This video was very interesting to me because I have always used social media for sharing my personal life, but never thought of using it to create professional opportunities. I am aware of famous people having professional pages because they are, well, famous. I am not famous and I have never thought that by creating a social media page separate from my personal one, that I could have the opportunity to create a personal brand based off my likes and hobbies. The video stated that professional personal branding does not have to be hard and can easily be started by anyone with a Smartphone.

Dennis and Logan gave examples of how to start your personal brand in order to create opportunities in life and one example they suggested was posting a short one minute interview clip. This interview can be done on anyone, but would be most beneficial if the person was a business owner or influential person related to your hobbies and/or interests. The two also suggested that it is best to do some research prior to an interview in order to have some background knowledge on the person you will be interviewing.

To tie in with the topic of creating a personal brand, I also found an article on the Forbes website titled “14 Personal Branding Tips To Help You Grow Your Influence.” I will not name all 14 tips, but found that tips number six and seven were important to remember and can be forgotten by people when posting on social media. Tip number six states to use your authentic voice and tip number seven states to embrace your imperfections. Many people think that they need to be seen as “perfect” to become a well-known social media influencer, but this is not the case. Sharing your struggles and lessons you have learned through life can be helpful to others who may have or may be going through some of the same things.

After watching the video and doing some of my own personal research, the key aspect that I obtained is that I am now contemplating the idea of starting my own personal brand, aside from my personal social media pages. Networking in this way will hopefully add to my net worth and help me create more opportunities in life even if I am already happily employed in my desired career field.

  1. Hi Tommie! I love your statement about improving your net worth. Congrats on almost being done with school. It has to feel like an accomplishment. I will be here until Fall 2020 as long as I don’t decide to take more. Your first blog looks very professional.

  2. Tommie, I feel the same way as you do when it comes to much Social Media. Long exposure to social media can begin to make you feel bad. It usually makes my soul hurt when I am on my phone for too long. I feel like I am missing out on life experiences because I am plugged into my phone for so long. It is good once and a while to unplug and go smell the fresh air. It is invigorating. That is good that you are taking the opportunity to build your knowledge on Social Media with this class as it doesn’t hurt to know the ins and outs of it. I hope the semester goes really well for you as I am also planning on graduating at the end of the semester as well.
